Gilt-lettered bevelled red cloth. First Edition. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, 1882.

Inscribed & signed by “Mary Phipson Beale, Authoress” on the half-title. Beale was an Australian ex-pat who married London barrister William Phipson Beale. It’s a mystery why she used a pseudonym. Beale included numerous international recipes, including Brazilian black beans (with a note on how Brazilians make them), curried rice risotto alla Milanese, Indian “chutnee”. Also included are stewed larks, rabbits “en papillot”, fried chicken, etc.

Faint spot to front cover, a touch of sunning to spine, else very good and bright.
