Green gingham cloth. Third Edition. Honolulu: Hawaiian Service, [1947].

Helen Alexander was the descendant of early American missionaries to Hawaii, and made her name by opening and running the Laniakea Tea Room in Honolulu. Fascinated by Hawaiian crafts, she also became a renowned quilter and weaver. She left for a few years to open an exclusive artists’ and writers’ colony in Westport, Connecticut, from whence she wrote her first cookbook, in 1926. Replete with Hawaiian recipes for guava mousse, pineapple & mint cocktail, poi, haupia, etc., as well as Chinese recipes, Alexander brought the flavor of the islands to the continent. She later returned to Honolulu and opened another tea room in a picturesque grass house on the hills above town, and published The Helen Alexander Hawaiian Cook Book.

Laid-in is a 1955 typed letter signed by Kay Hilliard, Home Economics editor at Sunset Magazine, to Mrs. Ruth Kynoch at “Duchess, Inc.”, a publisher of vintage postcards, particularly known for featuring Oakland, California, locations during the mid-20th century. Kynoch’s signature is on the page facing the half-title.
