The ikat stripe is one of the oldest woven structures in the world found independently in Central Asia, West Africa, Japan, and pre-Columbian South America, because it turns out that when you give humans thread and time, they eventually arrive at the same beautiful problem: how do you make a stripe that breathes?

The answer is resist-dyeing the threads before they are woven, so the color bleeds slightly at the edges, and the stripe becomes something alive rather than something ruled. The Japanese called it kasuri. The Uzbeks called it ikat. The result, in every culture that discovered it, was the same: a stripe with a halo.
