Warmly inscribed & SIGNED by M.F.K. Fisher and her friend John to their friend Averil Anderson. As They Were, published in 1982, is a collection of essays or “reports” of people and places Fisher has over many years. Fishers unexpurgated notes on those whod come to visit, the food shed served, the reactions of her guests, and her own reactions to them. The chicken was perfect, and so was the gratin, and so were the beans. They passed plates and dishes, and poured more wine, toasting each other, good fortune, and France.
